Cleerdin & Hamer Exhibitions Cambrian Explosion - Arjen Lancel

16-10-2026 - 10-01-2027

Visual artist Arjen Lancel creates sculptures, installations and works for public space, and curates art projects in and around Amsterdam. In Cambrian Explosion, he presents a series of 16 architectural sculptures conceived as models for an imaginary public space. The playful, organic constructions explore erosion, time and decay, as well as beauty, wonder and transience.

The works are inspired by Follies: functionless yet intriguing structures that appeared in large parks and gardens during the Romantic period in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lancel often refers to everyday objects in his work, transforming them in a metaphysical or poetic way, often with a humorous and critical undertone. His work reflects on the relationship between our personal surroundings and public space, and on the role of imagination in how we perceive and shape reality.
